Snell Hall: New Home Project

Known
  • Because the Bookstore's pay-parking lot is slated by campus planning to be replaced by a new building, the Bookstore is working with OSU to investigate options for relocation when its lease ends in 2014.
  • Snell Hall/MU East, home to many student programs, will be closed in the next few years.
  • Tentatively, OSU has given permission for that site to be used for a new student activities building. Our “tentative hold” expires next year.
  • In a March 2009 survey, students rejected the concept of a 100,000 sq. ft.
building on that site, with a per student per term cost of $110. e majority
    said it was too expensive.
  • The Memorial Union is the oldest student center on the west coast. Its last modification to the MU was in 1973 with the add of Snell Hall space. The student population was 30% small than current enrollment. The student center at U of O is 20% larger then MU and Snell space combined and their enrollment is smaller then OSU.

Possibilities Currently Being Considered

Renovation Only:
Renovation of the Memorial Union and other existing OSU facilities.

The addition of the current bookstore space allows for 14,600 sq. ft. of student administrative space to accommodate those being displaced from Snell Hall. In a re-configured space, event areas could be designed to be multi-purpose for more efficient use of space. Overall this would be a reduction of about 25% in space. is is the least expensive option at $20 per student per term, but the reduction of retail space could also affect student fees.

New Construction AND Renovation:
Building a new building on the site of the pay-parking lot and also renovating the current OSU Bookstore site for a multi-purpose space. There are three sizes of building being considered.

1.
50,000 gross sq. ft. (30,500 net) plus renovating the current Bookstore as a 5,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose room, capable of being divided into smaller rooms. is will accommodates all dislocated Snell programs (except for CAPS), plus allows for a small amount of new program/service space.
Cost per student per term isapproximately $32.

2.
56,000 gross sq. ft. (36,500 net) plus renovating the current Bookstore as a 5,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose room, capable of being divided into smaller rooms. is will accommodates all dislocated Snell programs (except for CAPS), plus allows for a moderate amount of new program/service space and slight growth of space for existing programs.
Cost per student per term is approximately $44.

Next Steps
Input from students will determine which option to pursue (renovate only using current bookstore space or build a new facility & renovate). The chosen plan will be voted on by students in a campus referendum. Regarless of the outcome of the referendum, the bookstore space will be vacated, Snell Hall will be closed, and the parking lot will be removed.
